Our Farm, Our Hopes, CSA
Dreamfarm has been operating as a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm since 2004. CSA establishes a direct relationship between the farm share members and the farmer. The result of this relationship educates the members about how their food is produced and it gives the farmers an opportunity to know who is purchasing their food. Supporting CSA puts your food dollars into the local family farm economy.
Like our dairy goats, laying hens are another important livestock on our farm. A variety of breeds are raised in portable “hoop houses” on pasture. Their homes are moved throughout the season to provide new pasture for grazing weeds and grasses and to scratch for worms and insects. Pastures allow the chickens to preen and lied down in the warmth of the sun with plenty of room to spread their wings. We supplement their diets with organic grain. As a result of this kind of diet, their eggs have higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and E, folic acid and carotenoids and half the cholesterol. You can taste the difference in the very yellow yolks and firm whites.
In addition to dairy goats and laying hens, we raise steers each year to keep our pastures from becoming overgrown. They are grass-fed only and this makes for a healthier meat. We recently added pigs and they too are raised on pasture. They get the added benefit of whey from our cheese making, this produces a very tasty and healthy pork product.
Our dog, Oliver, is proud to guard the farm, and our cats offer companionship and barn predator control. We also raise Jacob sheep, a primitive breed that has been in the U.S. only since the 1970s. We raise them for their majestic nature, versatile wool and to help in the conservation of this rare breed. Natural colored wool yarn is available for purchase.
Springtime on the farm is exciting and busy. The does (mother goats) have their babies in March. This is when the milk production begins which leads to the seasonal production of our cheese. The sheep also lamb at this time. The chicks that we brood through the winter begin to lay eggs and they get moved to their summer pens out on pasture.
We invite you to visit our farm and see what we do. Contact us to set up a date. We host an “open farm” day and will post that event on our website. Please stop by the Westside Community Market in the Department of Transportation parking lot every Saturday from April through October. We will have cheese, eggs and yarn for sale.
Thank you for supporting family farms and Community Supported Agriculture.
